Bricks and Mortar

Where to begin? We have had a full week at Casablanca! Dirt is flying, bricks are crumbling and another popcorn ceiling bites the dust! Sounds like what I would call A Big Fat Mess, and it is. But it’s also amazing progress. Let’s see if I can even begin to recap…

First, the chimney received it’s final blow. I don’t know how this thing has survived the strong winds of hurricane season. The mortar in these last bricks was practically dust. Didn’t take a whole lot to get them knocked down.Nov 27 11

Yep, that’s what’s left of a nest… no telling.Nov 27 10

The contractors cannot believe we want to keep these bricks! Oh, but we do. And they will soon be footpaths around the property. It’ll be great!Nov 27 8Nov 27 9Another big hole in the house! But we’re on the way to replacing it with something awesome!

I love to see what’s inside the walls. This room was the original house – just these 4 walls. It’s fascinating to wonder what life was like here in 1853!Nov 27 7Nov 27 5

Next on our list was to pick out the brick that would be used to replace this chimney and fireplace. Sounds simple enough, right? HAHAHAHAHAHA! We went to ACME Brick and worked with Carol (shout out to Carol!!). Now, I know there are a lot of ways to go with brick, but until you are charged with picking out THE ONE you just have no idea – there are approximately one million variations of brick.

We both want something that does not scream NEW CONSTRUCTION, and Eric zeroed in on a brick sample that truly looked “vintage.” In fact, it looked so vintage that I was skeptical it could hold up a chimney. Turns out, he picked the most expensive brick in the store – individually hand-crafted, or some such! As his dad used to say, “Son, you’ve got champagne taste on a Kool-Aid budget!”

Through divine intervention we landed on the right one. I didn’t even realize how right it was until Eric got this picture of the sample next to the chimney. We’re on the right track with the brick – hallelujah!Nov 27 12

We got down in the deep weeds on the kitchen this weekend. We had our #1 help, Mavinee, on board. Bless her heart. She is just simply the best! See…Nov 27 2Nov 27 1

Eric worked on his 17th ceiling by scraping popcorn off in the kitchen; we scrubbed, vacuumed, primed, sanded – all the same stuff. I’ve rarely left the house as nasty as I did on Saturday afternoon – yuck! Nov 27 4Nov 27 13

All is well here at Casablanca! Thank you for your interest and your prayers. We hope to have even more news to share soon!

Roof, Part 2

The roof is done! (Or at least I think it is… you know, sometimes I’m just not sure about these things!)  All appears to be well in the roof department. I think it’s a great time for a little Before and Almost-After action…

November 2017: Progress!Nov 17 5I love the double gables and how they took the roof line across under the baby gable. I’m THIS much closer to actually being Anne of Green Gables!!

November 2017: that blue sky, though!Nov 17 2

Next up is the chimney, I think! Thank you for checking out our progress! We hope to have more to report soon!

The Roof!

It was a blast to get to go to Coaling today during lunch and see the roof progress. I just love seeing it come together. The sky was beautiful, the weather is gorgeous and we are about to have a roof! What else do I need? Sleep… I need sleep.

It’s funny because the roof looks a little blue in the pictures – because the sky is SO BLUE! It’s actually a silver/tin color. It looks perfect!

The Ups and the Downs!

Casablanca is seeing some great progress these days! The roof is on its way – we are going to have an amazing attic! Here’s where we were last week:

Gotta admit, it’s a little stressful to drive up to this scene every day… ha!Nov 9 16

But the progress is just so much fun to see!Nov 3 2

We removed about 9′ of what used to be the back porch and are coming back in with the addition. And by “we” I just mean our bank acct – the real experts are doing the work!

As you can imagine, we were just so very happy to see it plugging right along. Is it true that everything that goes up, must come down? I’m not sure if you can imagine the heart break we experienced when we discovered that rain had seeped in and ruined our paint on the ceilings of the dog trot and dining room. Truly a gut punch.

Nov 9 9Nov 9 5Nov 9 6When I think about the hours we spent in these two rooms, I could just cry. The contractor will fix it, so that’s great. But it’s really really (REALLY) tough to see your blood, sweat and tears go to waste like that. I’m kind of in denial about this whole thing.

Moving on…  here are some pics of the framing from last week:Nov 9 15Nov 9 11Nov 9 10

I am truly fascinated with what’s under the exterior of this house. Check out this wall – it would have originally been the outside, south-facing wall of the original house. The boards are at least 16′ long, solid pieces of wood. The contractors say there isn’t a thing wrong with them. We are leaving all the original wood – since it’s in such great shape – because it’s a natural insulator.Nov 9 21

This isn’t a great shot, but you can see here the original beams in the first ceiling, the dark pieces beyond the new wood. They’re staying, too.Nov 9 12

In other news… there’s a sweet bird’s nest in the tree to the west of the house.Nov 9 20

And my dad’s maple tree is starting to see some color!Nov 9 17

Here’s what the north west corner of the house is looking like today!Nov 9 19The gable is going to have a window on each end. I think it’s going to be adorable!! Keep us in your prayers. It’s likely we won’t be moved in by Christmas. Maybe we can celebrate Valentine’s Day here! 🙂

Any Four Walls

Helen Rowland said Home is any four walls that enclose the right person. Our home, which will enclose all the right people, is getting some new walls today!

Yay for walls!  Here are some pics from around the construction site this week…

First, we got some plumbing…Nov 1 6Nov 1 7

Then the lumber showed up!

Then the framing started!

Nov 1 4Nov 1 5Nov 1 8

And then the rain came back… which means the guys have to crawl up on the house and get us water proofed!

Nov 1 10

But today, the sun is out and this is what’s going on at the house right now! So happy about this!

We can’t wait to see these sunsets every single day! Our blessings are just overflowing!
